Designing vs. Decorating

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, there is a big difference between designers and decorators. A designer can do both designing and decorator, whereas a decorator just approaches the room from an aesthetic point of view. A designer helps you solve problems and makes it look good in the process.

Some of the things a designer considers:
  • Space Planning of the Rooms
  • Traffic Flow
  • Multipurposing of Space
  • Focal Point
  • Furniture Arrangement
  • Storage
  • Lighting
  • Color and it's Emotional Effects
  • Appropriateness of Materials
In this room plan the clients had a multipurpose room for gathering. It had two focal points to accommodate, the TV and the Fireplace. The room would be used to entertain large groups and needed to maximize seating. They had unique artwork and antique saddles that were important for them to be displayed in the room. They also had opted not to go with shutters or blinds, and so they would need draperies to filter light and insulate.

By understanding their needs I was able to create a plan using their existing furniture and art and combine it in a way that was functional and beautiful. Whether your style is western or modern or anywhere in between, a designer just may be the key to pull your look together.
